Love & Chocolate
Gail Cleare
from Red Adept Publishing

When Sarah Westwood's deadbeat husband deserts her and their young son, she takes a job at her family's restaurant, The Three Chocolatiers, working with her famous chef grandfather and her pastry chef cousin, Paisley. Determined to never fall for the wrong guy again, Sarah vows to stick to chocolate and steer clear of men, especially her delicious ice-cream supplier, Blake Harrison. But when Paisley signs her up for a dating site, Sarah is soon engaging in a sexy online flirtation with a stranger.

Blake Harrison wants nothing more than for Sarah to give him a chance, but all she'll give him is the cold shoulder. Never one to run from a challenge, he works on becoming the kind of man Sarah can't refuse. And since he just happens to be on the same dating site, he's not above using a little cyber-intel to worm his way into her heart.

When Sarah's grandfather collapses just weeks before an upscale chocolate-themed wedding that could make or break the business, the staff of The Three Chocolatiers is sent into a tailspin. With the pressure rising on personal and professional fronts, Sarah might just have to let someone sweet melt her defenses. Includes four recipes from The Three Chocolatiers Cookbook.

The neighborhood was still quiet when Sarah woke up the next morning. She lay on her back and watched shadows move on the bedroom ceiling. Soft sunlight bounced off the green walls and cast a celery glow above her, contrast for the flickering silhouettes of sickles and stars. Crack and curve shifted with each shake of the wind that rustled through the huge maple tree outside the window.

Last night, she thought, remembering.

Her impulse was to leap out of bed and run to the bathroom for her robe. She felt him lying next to her, a column of warmth along her side. His breath came and went with a quiet whistle, in the easy rhythm of sleep. Turning her head, she sniffed his scent mixed with the clean smell of her pillowcase.

Blake turned his head and sighed, his long legs stretching out beyond the foot of the bed as he rolled onto his back. She watched his profile. Strong, even features, with full lips that curved deliciously into a little smile.

He was such a happy person, even asleep. It was his nature. The optimism was contagious, tempting her to let down her guard. Hed been very sweet to Devon too. But the thought of her son brought a vague sense of discomfort, and her stomach clenched.

What was I thinking? How could I let this happen?

Sarah glanced at Blake again then carefully peeled back the sheet on her side of the bed. Swinging one bare leg over the side, she shifted her weight to stand up.

Morning, Beautiful. His voice was deep and full of sleep. She felt it rumble in the quiet space, shaking her thoughts into a dialogue, putting her on the spot. Shed have to answer now. Shed have to turn around.

The palm of his hand ran across her naked back, making her shiver. Then his arm slipped around her waist and pulled her back into bed, up against him under the sheets. His body heat slid over her, and she melted into a loose curl. He snuggled his face into her shoulder and kissed the side of her neck.

Blake, I dont want you to...

He continued the kisses around her shoulder, turning her onto her back.

...get the wrong idea...

He leaned over to cover her with his body, looking down into her eyes.

I mean, she said, staring into the color of summer leaves with the sun behind them, floating away from logic. I dont really do this kind of thing, you know.

He smiled and bent his head and kissed her. Images from their lovemaking the night before flooded into her mindsmooth limbs entwined, breath whisperingas he took the kiss deeper, and she completely forgot what shed been trying to say.

Shed get up and find her robe in a little while. They could talk over coffee. Plenty of time before Miki and Devon got home. Swirling into a flow of heat and sparks, with that peaceful green light shining through her translucent eyelids, Sarah let herself relax and receive.

Maybe it wasnt a mistake. Maybe she could trust him. Or maybe she was being stupid and had forgotten what she had to lose.

Exclusive Sneak Peek: The Peppermint Mocha Murder by Colette London + Giveaway (US/Can)

The Peppermint Mocha Murder (A Chocolate Whisperer Mystery #5)
Colette London
from Kensington Books

Its beginning to look like a merry Christmas for Hayden Mundy Moore. On vacation from providing her sought-after expertise in all things chocolate, Hayden heads to snowy New England with her friend and financial advisor, Travis, for the opening of his pals highly-touted holiday musical. But when the shows producer is murdered, Hayden trades sampling Chocolate Santas for finding the killerespecially since this time, Travis is the one asking for her help...

Soon Hayden discovers theres more to Traviss chic hometown than mulled wine and cocoa cookies. But thats just the beginning. Almost no one, including Travis, is quite what they seem. Did the shows lead have more savage motives than stardom? Could the dead producers husband have felt a murderous envy for his successful wife? Getting behind the mistletoe and jingle bells will take all of Haydens savvyalong with some super caffeinated Peppermint Mochasif she hopes to catch a killer with a heart more bitter than the darkest truffle...

Feeling hopelessly jet lagged, I studied my room at the B&B. Id loved it on sight, possibly because it looked as though a holiday-themed boutique had exploded inside.

The walls featured framed Christmas artwork. The antique bureau, nightstands, and bedstead were all decked out in swags of holly, complete with tiny red berries. There were red velvet bows, colonial-style garlands of crimson wooden beads, and plenty of wreathed holiday candles.

I was in Sproutes, Massachusetts. So far, the place felt like Christmastown, USA. I was in love.

I was also hideously awake. I recognized the feeling. It meant thered be no more sleep for me.

Not wanting to disturb anyone, I got out of bed quietly and tiptoed downstairs.

Id make chocolate-peppermint truffles, I mused as I reached what I judged must be the kitchen. That was the flavor of my most successful Christmas treat.

Happily envisioning the B&Bs guests smiling as they tasted my chocolaty creations, I groped for the kitchens light switch. No dice. I set down my bag full of chocolate-making gear, and tried again.

The lights flared to life. I blinked against their brightness and crouched to retrieve my bag.

But I wasnt in the kitchen I realized as I straightened. Instead, I was in the dining room. And this wasnt going to be a memorable stay in Sproutes for any of the reasons Id imagined.

Judging by the inert, awkward pose of the woman sprawled out beside the enormous dining room table, splattered by what appeared to be Christmas wassail punch, Id just stumbled upon another murder.

Interview with RaeAnne Thayne, Author of Season of Wonder + Giveaway (cont. US only)

Today I'd like to welcome RaeAnne Thayne back to the blog to celebrate the exciting release of Season of Wonder, the latest installment in the Haven Point series from HQN Books, a Harlequin imprint!

Welcome to Books la Mode, RaeAnne! Let's get this interview started.

Will you please share a brief introduction with us?

Im not one of those people who knew from birth she was destined to become a writer. I always loved to read and throughout my childhood I could usually be found with a book in my hands. To the disgust of my friends, I even enjoyed creative writing assignments that made them all groan. But I had other dreams besides writing. I wanted to be an actress or a teacher or a lawyer.

Life took a different turn for me, though, when my mother made me take a journalism elective in high school (thanks, Mom!). I knew the first day that this was where I belonged.

After I graduated from college in journalism, I took a job at the local daily newspaper and I reveled in the challenge and the diversity of it. One day I could be interviewing the latest country music star, the next day I was writing about local motorcycle gangs or interviewing an award-winning scientist.

Through it allthrough the natural progression of my career from reporter to editorI wrote stories in my head. Not just any stories, either, but romances, the kind of books I have devoured since junior high school, with tales about real people going through the trials and tribulations of life until they find deep and lasting love.

I had no idea how to put these people on paper, but knew I had to trytheir stories were too compelling for me to ignore. I sold my first book in 1995 and now, more than 40 books later, Ive come to love everything about writing, from the click of the computer keys under my fingers to the thats-it! feeling I get when a story is flowing.

I write full-time now (well, as full-time as I can manage juggling my kids!) amid the raw beauty of the northern Utah mountains.

Even though I might not have dreamed of being a writer when I was younger, now I simply cant imagine my life any other way.

It's amazing to get to feature you today! Readers, here's a bit about the book, which will hits shelves today:

Hes giving her children a season of wonder...

Dani Capelli seized a chance to start over in a small town with her daughters. Now, facing her first Christmas in Haven Point, she wonders if leaving New York was a mistake. Dani loves working alongside veterinarian Dr. Morales, but her two children arent adjusting to small-town life. And then theres Dr. Moraless son, RubenDanis next-door neighbor. Gorgeous, muscled and dependable, the deputy sheriff is everything she secretly craves and cant bear to risk loving... and losing.

Ruben never pictured himself falling for a big-city woman like Dani. But beneath her prickly facade, shes caring and softhearted and she needs all the love and protection he can give. When Danis teenage daughter starts acting out, Ruben draws on family traditions to show the girls just how magical a Haven Point Christmas can be. But can he convince Dani that shes found a home for the holidaysand foreverin his arms?

Readers will be thrilled to see that you are back with another Haven Point noveland just in time for the holiday season! Can you tell us a little about this book and what readers can expect from it?

Season of Wonder is about taking risks and finding the courage to embrace new possibilities. When a veterinarian and single mom from Queens moves her two daughters to Haven Point, the unique family struggles to find a place in the small Idaho town. The book features a feisty heroine, a hero I adored writing, an angsty teenager and her adorable sister. Theres no better place to spend the holidays than Haven Point!

The heroine of this novel is Daniela Capelli, a newcomer to Haven Point and a single mother with a dark past. Can you tell us a bit about Dani and where the inspiration for her character came from?

I have so much admiration for people who have made poor choices in the past, sometimes because of circumstances thrust upon them, but still have the spark inside them to want something different for themselves and for their children. Dani came from a tough childhood, orphaned at a young age and thrust into foster care. As a hurt, angry, lost teenager, she did things she later regretted. Through hard work and gritand the help of others along the wayshe managed to reach her personal dreams and become a veterinarian. She wants to raise her daughters in a place where the whole family can finally put down roots and feel part of something.

Ruben Morales is the hero of Season of Wonder, and in addition to being a charming Haven Point sheriffs deputy, he is also the son of Danis bossand her next-door neighbor! Can you tell us a little more about Ruben and what makes him a good fit for Dani?

I fell in love with Ruben when I introduced him in a previous book, Snowfall on Haven Point. He had a very minor role in that one but I knew the moment he stepped onto the page that one day I would write his book. Ruben is a decent, dedicated law enforcement officer who cares about his family, his friends and the people he serves. When Danis oldest daughter Silver gets into trouble, Ruben is the first one who has her back and tries to help her learn from her mistakes. Because of her own past mistakes, Dani is drawn to that core of decency in Ruben and the compassion he shows to those around him. From the moment Dani arrives in Haven Point, Ruben is smitten with her, but it takes her a little longer to trust her heart.

Much of the tension in this novel centers around Danis troubled past and secrets she is trying to keep buried. What would you like readers to take away from this novel in terms of dealing with past demons and coming to terms with the past?

Dani carries a big burden, one she is afraid will ruin any chance she and her daughters have at finding a place in Haven Point. She carries a great deal of pain and guilt from choices that werent her own. At one point, after she finally finds the courage to tell Ruben the truth, he tells her that some people will definitely judge her for the mistakes made by someone she once loved. Those who do arent people she needs in her life. I think that is a powerful reminder not to waste this precious time we have here on this earth trying to impress people we dont need in our lives anyway.

Another major theme in this novel is starting overwhich is often harder than it looks! What made you want to write a story about a single mother who is looking for a fresh start for her and her daughters, and what did you learn about turning over a new leaf while writing this book?

I dont know if I learned this lesson but it was a reminder to me that everyone is fighting a hard battle. We dont always know the difficulties people have overcome or the challenges they still face, so my essential message is to be kind always. Sometimes a smile or a freely offered hand of friendship can make all the difference to someone trying to re-invent and re-imagine himor herself.

A lovely and fitting title indeed! Where can you be found on the web?

It was a pleasure to be able to get to know you better today, RaeAnne! Thank you again for dropping by, and best of luck with future endeavors!

Christmas Cake Murder (Hannah Swensen #23)
Joanne Fluke
from Kensington Books

Its Christmas many years ago, and topping young Hannah Swensens wish list is becoming the go-to baker in Lake Eden, Minnesota. But as Hannah finds out, revisiting holiday memories can be murder...

With her dream of opening The Cookie Jar taking shape, Hannahs life matches the hectic December hustle and bustle in Lake Edenespecially when she agrees to help recreate a spectacular Christmas Ball from the past in honor of Essie Granger, an elderly local in hospice care. But instead of poring over decadent dessert recipes for the merry festivities, she instantly becomes enthralled by Essies old notebooks and the tale of a woman escaping danger on the streets of New York. Hannahs surprised by Essies secret talent for penning crime fiction. Shes even more surprised when the story turns real. As Hannah prepares to run a bakery and move out of her mothers house, itll be a true miracle if she can prevent another Yuletide disaster by solving a mystery as dense as a Christmas fruitcake...

Cocoa-Crunch Cookies

Preheat oven to 350F., rack in the middle position.

  • 1 and 1/2 cups softened butter (3 sticks, 3/4 pound, 12 ounces)
  • 1 and 1/4 cups white (granulated) sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (I used Hersheys)
  • 2 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (pack it down in the cup when you measure it)
  • 1 and 1/2 cups finely crushed plain regular potato chips (measure AFTER crushing. I used Lays, put them in a plastic zip-lock bag, and crushed them with my hands)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (I used Nestl)
  • 1/3 cup white (granulated) sugar for dipping

Hannahs 1st Note: Use regular potato chips, the thin, salty ones. Dont use baked chips, or rippled chips, or chips with the peels on, or kettle-fried, or flavored, or anything thats supposed to be better for you than those wonderfully greasy, salty, old-fashioned, crunchy potato chips.

In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, sugar, eggs, salt, and vanilla extract until the mixture is light and fluffy. (You can do this by hand, but its a lot easier with an electric mixer.)

Add the quarter-cup of unsweetened cocoa powder. Mix it in thoroughly.

Add the flour in half-cup increments, mixing well after each addition.

Add the crushed potato chips and mix well.

Take the bowl out of the mixer and add the semisweet chips by hand. Stir them in so that they are evenly distributed.

Form one-inch dough balls with your hands and place them on an UNGREASED cookie sheet, 12 to a standard-sized sheet. (As an alternative, you can line your cookie sheets with parchment paper.)

Place the sugar in a small bowl. Spray the flat bottom of a drinking glass with Pam or another nonstick cooking spray, dip it in the sugar, and use it to flatten each dough ball. (Dip the glass in the sugar for each cookie ball.)

Bake your cookies at 350F, for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cookies are starting to turn golden at the edges. (Mine took the full 12 minutes.)

Let the Cocoa-Crunch Cookies cool on the cookie sheet for 2 minutes and then remove them to a wire rack to cool completely. (If you used parchment paper, all you have to do is pull it over to the wire rack and let the cookies cool right on the paper.)

Yield: Approximately 6 to 7 dozen crunchy, chocolate, shortbread-like cookies, depending on cookie size

Exclusive Sneak Peek: Rooted in Deceit by Wendy Tyson + Giveaway (US/Can)

Rooted in Deceit (A Greenhouse Mystery #4)
Wendy Tyson
from Henery Press

Its summertime in Winsome. Washington Acres is abloom, Megan is preparing for the grand opening of their wood-fired pizza farm, and things with Megans beau, handsome Dr. Finn, are getting as hot as the August temperatures. But when Megans neer-do-well father arrives in Pennsylvania with his high-maintenance Italian wife, Sylvia, and announces theyre staying at the new yoga retreat center a town away, a sweet occasion sours.

Eager to secure pieces for her Milan boutique, Sylvia finagles a meeting with up-and-coming artist Thana Moore, whose work is showing at the retreat center. After their explosive encounter, Thana is murdered and Sylvia becomes the prime suspect. Only Sylvia isnt the only one with ties to the artistonce upon a time, Thana Moore had been Megans best friend. As Megan delves into Thanas past, piecing together the years since their falling out, she realizes that something sinister is afoot in Bucks County. Unless Megan can find the killer, this idyllic summer will turn nightmarish. Innocent people may be imprisonedand even more could die.

Megan found her father in the upstairs hall, outside the room hed once shared with Megans mother, Charlotte. Since Charlotte abandoned her family more than two decades ago, the room had been vacant. Back then Eddie, suddenly finding himself to be the too-young single father of a daughter under ten, had moved to a guest room. Their marital quarters remained empty for years, until Eddie relocated to Italy. After that, Bibi, not one for overt sentimentality but a great holder of grudges, made it into a sewing room. Any traces of young Charlotte Birch had been swept out with the dust bunnies.

I met her, you know. Megan moved down the darkened hall toward her father. She watched him breathe deeply, square his shoulders. Always preparing for a fight, it seemed. Even when there was no enemy in sight. My mother, I mean.

Eddies eyes widened slightly. Oh?

Christmastime. Last year.

Not since?

No. Not since.

Thats your mother, I guess. Eddie put his hand against the heavy wooden door and removed it quickly, as though the surface had burned him. Unreliable.

She wrote me a letter.

She remarried, Megan. Has a new family. His words were almost a whisper. I dont want you to get hurt.

I know about her other children. And as for getting hurt, its a little late for that.

Eddie picked up the suitcase that sat on the worn runner and nodded. Well, then.

Just like Eddie, Megan thought. Leaving when the going gets tough. But, she reminded herself, he was the one who stayed all those years ago when Charlotte disappeared.

Megan said, Do you really have to leave?

Sylvia made reservations. We just came for the evening, to freshen up and say hello.

You can change those reservations.

Her father gave her a sad smile. I dont think so, Megan.

Bibi

Eddies hand shot up. His eyes pleaded for understanding. Sylvias a good woman, Megan. I know she can seem high strung, but shes a visionary. She sees the positive where others see only failure, possibility where others see futility. She has a sharp eye for business.

You love her?

Yes, Eddie replied. Very much.

Failure and futility. As Megan watched her father disappear into the guest room to retrieve their bags, she wasnt so sure it was really Sylvias business savvy he was referring to.
