Exclusive Sneak Peek: The Wake Up by Catherine Ryan Hyde + Giveaway (US only)

The Wake Up
Catherine Ryan Hyde
from Lake Union // Amazon

From New York Times-bestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde comes a hauntingly emotional novel of how one mans life changes forever when he rediscovers his ability to feel the pain of others.

Something has been asleep in forty-year-old cattle rancher Aiden Delacorte for a long time. It all comes back in a rush during a hunting trip, when hes suddenly attuned to the animals around him, feeling their pain and fear as if it were his own. But the newfound sensitivity of Aidens wake up has its price. He can no longer sleepwalk through life, holding everyone at arms length. As he struggles to cope with a trait hes buried since childhood, Aiden falls in love with Gwen, a single mother whose young son bears a burden of his own.

Sullen and broken from his experiences with an abusive father, Milo has turned to acting out in violent and rebellious ways. Aiden can feel the boys pain, as well as that of his victims. Now he and Milo must sift through their pasts to find empathy with the innocent as well as the guilty, to come to terms with their deepest fears, and to finally discover the compassionate heart of a family.

Chapter One
Clouds and Shadows

The phone jangled Aiden out of sleep. His heart raced, and he knocked over a plastic drinking glass and the alarm clock while reaching to grab the receiver.

His panic didnt last. The voice on the other end of the line soothed him on contact. It felt like a drink of cold water, its relief spreading down through his gut on a hot and dusty day.

It was only one word. But it repaired everything.

Hey.

It was feminine and smooth, that word. It felt like everything in the world Aiden had found to love. Or maybe thats genuinely what it was. He could feel his heart expand, or at least the sensation of it filling. Swelling. It ached. It was painful in a very real way, but Aiden wouldnt have traded it for anything.

Oh, he mumbled, still mostly asleep. Gwen. Hey.

Im sorry. I know its late. I know I woke you up. I knew I would, but...

Aiden sat up on the edge of the bed. He was wearing only boxer shorts, and the air in the room felt blissfully cool against his bare chest and back. But what? Are you okay?

In the silence that followed, he watched shadows cast by the branches of scrub oak trees sway on his bedroom wall. He looked through his window to see the dark shapes of his sleeping brood mares in the nearest pasture.

I guess so, she said. I guess I just needed some reassurance.

About what?

Tomorrow.

What about it?

Youre not worried about it?

No. Not at all. Why would I be? Im looking forward to it.

Just... you know. There was a lot that could be read into her voice. Aiden knew that. He listened as hard as he could to every word she didnt say. You meeting the kids and all.

Youre worried they wont like me?

More that you wont like them. Its hard. You know. When you have kids and you meet somebody new.

Im going to love them. I like kids. I told you.

I know, she said. But she didnt sound as though that settled much. I should have had you meet them sooner. I was a little surprised you didnt press the issue.

For a moment nobody said anything more.

What can I say to reassure you? he asked.

Nothing, I guess. Tomorrow just has to get here. Im sorry I woke you up for no real reason.

No, its okay.

Go back to sleep.

I will.

He didnt, though. He thought he would but he didnt. Something about her tone. About the subtext of her words. She was worried. Not just mildly insecure. Genuinely worried.

Maybe she was worried about nothing. But Aiden couldnt shake the thought that maybe she knew something he didnt.

I'm trying to wean myself off of caffeine and don't like to exert too much energy in the morning (it tends to wear me out and muck up my entire day). Generally I think being able to get out of bed in a comfortable environment helps me the most: dim lights rather than sun beaming through the windows, heater on if the weather is cold, and super fuzzy, plushy pajamas and slippers. It doesn't necessarily make waking up easy, but it does make it easier.

Interview with Maggie McConnon, Author of Bel, Book, and Scandal + Giveaway (US/Can)

I'd like to welcome Maggie McConnon to the blog today to celebrate the exciting release of Bel, Book, and Scandal from St. Martin's Press!

Welcome to Books la Mode, Maggie! Let's get this interview started.

Will you please share a brief introduction with us?

Maggie McConnon grew up in New York immersed in Irish culture and tradition. A former Irish stepdancer, she was surrounded by a family of Irish musicians who still play at family gatherings. She credits her Irish grandparents with providing the stories of their homeland and their extended families as the basis for the stories she tells in her Belfast McGrath novels.

It's amazing to get to feature you today! Readers, here's a bit about the book, which just hit shelves last week:

Maggie McConnon rings in Christmas in Bel, Book, and Scandal, the third adventure for everybodys favorite Irish-American culinary artist turned amateur sleuth.

Bel McGrath tries her best to keep herself on the straight and narrow but she just has a taste for trouble. This time danger arrives in the form of a newspaper left behind by visitors to Shamrock Manorand a photograph that jolts Bel out of the present and back into a dark chapter from her past. The person in the photo is Bels best friend Amy Mitchell, long gone from Fosters Landing, at a commune in upstate New York shortly after her disappearance. The picture, and Bels burning desire to find out what happened to Amyand whether she may still be aliveis the catalyst for a story in which old secrets are revealed, little by littleand certain characters are shown to not be as genuine as Bel once thought.

As a huge fan of first lines, Id love to hear the first line of Bel, Book, and Scandal. Could you give us a brief commentary on it?
I was wet, cold, and tired, but despite the fact that she was ready to kill me with her bare hands for staying out all night, my mother addressed all three of my immediate needs before saying anything else.
This book starts with a flashback to a time when Bel was a teenager; it is the night her best friend disappeared from Fosters Landing and was never seen again. The two other books in this series start as flashbacks as well; I wanted the reader to understand Bels motives as an adult, what shaped her thoughts and actions in present day. In Bel, Book, and Scandal, we pick up with Bel sitting in the local police department, awaiting word on Amy, not realizing that no one knows where Amy is and that she will be questioned as to her last moments with her best friend.

Tell us about your road to publication, such as how you first queried, unexpected challenges, and things you picked up along the way.

I used various web sites to track down agents, see how a query letter was written, and to research the process in general. I queried about twenty or so agents until I received word that my current agent wanted to represent me. That process took about a year. It was another year or so until we found a publisher. Not being a patient person, I found the process protracted and stressful but now that I have been doing this for a dozen or more years, I understand the timing better. I tell writers to be patient, keep at it, and never give up. The road to publication is long and bumpyreading rejection letters isnt for the faint of heart!but if you keep working at it, youll reach your goal.

Are the characters from your book based off anyone you know in real life? How much else of your actual life gets written into your fiction?

There are no true McGraths in my real life. However, having grown up Irish in the New York area, there are definitely aspects of my childhood that come through: the Irish music, the storytelling, the big family dinners. I have always loved weddings so putting Bel back into the family business allows me to imagine the worst bridezilla, the most cold-footed groom. And being able to write about food makes my heart sing. If anything comes from real life into the Bel series, its the experimentation in the kitchen and the joy of researching a new, complicated recipe.

Out of all the fantastic books out there, what makes Bel, Book, and Scandal stand out from the rest?

I would have to say the characters. I think that the McGrath family (Bels brothers, her parents) are what round out the story and give it a bit of heart. I also think that anyone who grew up with siblings will recognize at least one person they know in one of Bels brothers, be it the responsible one or the one who continually gets into trouble, even as an adult.

Blog babes, click "Read more" to find out Maggie's best personal and professional advice. We're also hosting a giveaway for a finished copy of Bel, Book, and Scandal, so you don't want to miss that either!
Give aspiring writers a piece of advice you wish you had known before getting published.

As I said above, keep at it and never give up. Good storytelling is good storytelling and although it is subjective, there is someone out there who will like your writing and your narrative. Most importantly, try to write every day. By day, I am a textbook editor, so I am writing all day long. Its not necessarily the most creative writing, but trying to encourage an author to go in a certain direction definitely takes creativity and persuasion, two things you need to write a good story. Also, if you havent already, pick up a copy of On Writing by Stephen King. I found Kings advice invaluable.

Now give us your best personal advicesomething you wish you had known when you were younger and would offer to your own kids.

Dont sweat the small stuff... or even the big stuff. Everything has a way of working out, even if you dont see it at the time. In hindsight, youll wonder why you were ever stressed in the first place!

Where can you be found on the web?

It was a pleasure to be able to get to know you better today, Maggie! Thank you again for dropping by, and best of luck with future endeavors!

Beyond the petty high school things, I can't think of anything major. But you bet in high school I've seen it all: teachers doing unseedy things, people being caught cheating, getting in trouble for forging notes, etc. At Berkeley, the political climate was always on the news, especially in the past few years... if that counts.

Interview with Sandra Hill, Author of Cajun Crazy + Giveaway (US/Can)

I'd like to welcome Sandra Hill to the blog today to celebrate the exciting release of Cajun Crazy from Avon, a HarperCollins imprint!

Welcome to Books la Mode, Sandra! Let's get this interview started.

Will you please share a brief introduction with us?

Sandra Hill is a graduate of Penn State and worked for more than 10 years as a features writer and education editor for publications in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Writing about serious issues taught her the merits of seeking the lighter side of even the darkest stories.

She is the wife of a stockbroker and the mother of four sons.

It's amazing to get to feature you today! Readers, here's a bit about the book, which just hit shelves last month:

Welcome back to New York Times bestseller Sandra Hills Cajun country, where love heats up the Louisiana bayou...

Former Chicago cop Simone LeDeux is back home in the bayou, sharing a double wide in the Pearly Gates trailer park to help her mama recover from surgery. Her one rule: no Cajun men. Loved and left by too many double-crossing Cajuns, Simone puts bad experience to good use by opening Legal Belles: an agency that uncovers cheating spouses.

Suddenly shes confronting a two-timer about to swindle his wife out of millions and antagonizing New Orleans bigwigs over an illegal sex club. Adam Lanier learns of the dangerous game Simone is playing... and the sexy single dad comes to her aid. Known as a rogue in the courtroom and a player in the bedroom, the ragin Cajun has Simone triply on guard.

With their crazy chemistry, danger on their trail, and infamous LeDeux relative Tante Lulu working her magical matchmaking, the bayou has never been this steamy.

As a huge fan of first lines, Id love to hear the first line of Cajun Crazy. Could you give us a brief commentary on it?

I'm usually a sucker for catchy first lines, too, but in the case of Cajun Crazy I prefer to quote the voicemail that my heroine, Simone LeDeux, gets from her mother in the opening scene:
"Hi, honey. I haven't heard from you since las' week. Did ya kick that no-good Jack Landry out on his cheatin' Cajun be-hind, lak I told you to?"
This excerpt is an important clue to what the book is about. Simone is a cop who decides to open a Cheaters-type detective agency. And she's decided, no more Cajun men in her life.

Tell us about your road to publication, such as how you first queried, unexpected challenges, and things you picked up along the way.

I like to say that I sold my first book by not winning a contest. One of the judges in a writing contest I entered was so appalled at my not winning or placing that she put me in touch with her agent who in turn sold my first book, The Reluctant Viking, as part of a three-book deal. Oddly, I started out writing straight historical romances, but about that time Constance O'Day Flannery wrote one of her first time-travels, and I thought, "I can do this!" Before that, I had no idea I had a voice for humor.

Are the characters from your book based off anyone you know in real life? How much else of your actual life gets written into your fiction?

Suffice it to say, someone asked me at a cocktail party one time (and, yes, people do ask questions like this), "Do you have the kind of sex life you describe in your books?"

My answer, "I wish!" Seriously, I don't know any humans who have that kind of sex life. Maybe some super virile Vikings, or Cajuns.

I do get many of the humor ideas from my husband and four sons who can be incredibly funny. In fact, I can't tell you how many times one of my sons has said or done something and then told me, "That better not end up in one of your books." My heroines are probably the kind of women I wish I could be; I would never dare do half of what they do. Stunt woman. Female Navy SEAL. Lawyer at Angola Prison. Treasure hunter. Enough said!

Out of all the fantastic books out there, what makes Cajun Crazy stand out from the rest?

It's one of the funniest books I've written, in my opinion. A heroine who's been married and divorced three times, who vows to stay clear of any more tempting Cajun men, but then runs into a rogue lawyer, who is the ultimate player in the courtroom as well as the bedroom and happens to be Cajun. Add to that a wacky mother who's discovered her inner Kardashian and a fondness for Spanx. Not to mention the outrageous Tante Lulu.

Blog babes, click "Read more" to find out Sandra's best personal and professional advice. We're also hosting a giveaway for a finished copy of Cajun Crazy, so you don't want to miss that either!

Give aspiring writers a piece of advice you wish you had known before getting published.

It's hard work and sometimes boring. You need to treat it like a regular job that you work at every day. Doesn't matter if you have a family, or an outside job. If you really want it, you will make the time. Get up at 4am if you have to. I do. And stop worrying about getting things right from the get-go. I love that adage attributed to Nora Roberts: You can always fix a bad page. You can't fix a blank page. Finally, if you really want this, don't give up.

Now give us your best personal advicesomething you wish you had known when you were younger and would offer to your own kids.

Let go, let God. Sometimes you need to accept the curves life throws your way and just hang on for the wild ride.

Where can you be found on the web?

It was a pleasure to be able to get to know you better today, Sandra! Thank you again for dropping by, and best of luck with future endeavors!

Often, if there are multiple questions or things that need a response in a text message (or email, Facebook post, etc. what have you), my boyfriend will only respond to the last one.

For example, if I ask him "What are you bringing to the dinner party? Can you give me a ride home as well?" he will just answer "Sure."
Or, "How was your long weekend? Did you have a good time with your family? Are you back yet? I want to see you," and he replies "I want to see you too." LMAO. I've observed the majority of my male friends do this though, girls never. (Male readers, any insight?? Anyone?!) It's very annoying and I feel stupid having to repeat myself over text.

Exclusive Sneak Peek: The Lady Travelers Guide to Larceny with a Dashing Stranger by Victoria Alexander + Giveaway (US/Can)

The Lady Travelers Guide to Larceny with a Dashing Stranger (The Lady Travelers Society #2)
Victoria Alexander
from Harlequin

Join the Lady Travelers Society in their latest romantic misadventure, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Victoria Alexander

She must secure her future

A lady should never be obliged to think of matters financial! But when Lady Wilhelmina Bascombes carefree, extravagant lifestyle vanishes with the demise of her husband, her only hope lies in retrieving a family treasurea Renaissance masterpiece currently in the hands of a cunning art collector in Venice. Thankfully, the Lady Travelers Society has orchestrated a clever plan to get Willie to Europe, leading a tour of mothers and daughtersand one curiously attentive man.

He must reclaim his heritage

Dante Augustus Montagues one passion has long been his familys art collection. Hes finally tracked a long-lost painting to the enchanting Lady Bascombe. Convinced that the canvas had been stolen, he will use any means to reclaim his birthrightincluding deception. But how long before pretend infatuation gives way to genuine desire?

Now theyre rivals for a prize that will change everything

Willie and Dante know theyre playing with fire in the magical moonlit city. Their common quest could compromise them both... or lead them to happily-ever-after.

After a bit of not very subtle probing on his part, your father finally admitted that he wished to contact you to inform you Georges creditors had contacted him. He wanted you to know he would not settle the debts of a man he disapproved of. Poppys lips pressed together in a hard line. He was quite firm on that point.

Nor would I ever ask him to. Willie raised her chin, a gesture of defiance that had driven her father mad for as long as she could remember. I would become a beggar on the streets before I would ask him for anything.

Not that it would come to that. At least not yet. In the few months since returning from her self-imposed exile, Willie had reluctantly sold the country house and had managed to pay off all of Georges creditors. She had also discovered most of the jewels given her by her husband were paste, nice enough to look at but essentially worthless. She did hope any jewelry he had no doubt given those women who had been the objects of his fleeting affections through the years was no more valuable than hers.

Willie had long suspected George had not been entirely faithful but in this Willie was something of a coward. She had never confronted him about his dalliances with other women. Upon reflection she wasnt sure why, although there was a vast difference between vague suspicion and certain knowledge. She had on occasion been tempted to stray from her own vows of fidelity but could never quite bring herself to do so. In spite of her many faultsand she was fairly certain that was a very long listdisloyalty and dishonesty were not among them. Still, it was one thing to lie outright and quite another to prevaricate, evade and omit.

Exactly how bad are your financial circumstances? Poppy asked.

Well... Willie searched for the right words. As much as she needed Poppys help she did hate to worry the old girl. Theyre really not nearly as bad as they were. She drew a deep breath. I sold the country housefortunately it was not entailed and so mine to do with as I pleased. And I am now debt-free.

A difficult step but I must say I am impressed by your decision.

I did so love that house. Willie couldnt quite hide the mournful note in her voice. From the moment shed first set eyes on Bascombe Manor, a vaguely whimsical concoction of every popular construction style of the last three hundred years surrounded by grounds that were every bit as capricious as the house itself, she had fallen head over heels. It was a happy, welcoming sort of place and a far cry from her familys country house. Hillborough Hall was an imposing, unyielding fortress of marble and granite. The building proclaimed someone of unrelenting propriety and single-minded determination held sway here and fun would notwould neverbe allowed.

And your house in town?

That I have managed to retain, at least for the moment. It was perhaps best not to tell Poppy that the Mayfair house was very nearly stripped of all its contents. Willie had felt obligated to pay the servants at both Bascombe Manor and the London house what was owed to them before she regretfully terminated their employment. Her butler and cookMajors and his wife, Patsyhad refused to accept their dismissal, declaring she was their family and one did not abandon family when times grew difficult. As much as Willie felt a great deal of affection for them, she did not expect this kind of loyalty. The kind that brought a warm rush to ones heart. Willie and Patsy had wrapped their arms around each other and wept for a few moments. Even Majorsas properly trained as any butler anywherehad sniffed back something that might well have been a tear. I would hate to lose that house, as well. I do need somewhere to live.

I have small interactions with strangers all the time, but one that has stood out to me is when I was on a bus in Seoul, an American woman asked me what book I was reading as she noticed it was in English. While running into expats or foreigners in Seoul isn't uncommon, I'd never really had anyone strike up a conversation with me out of the blue before! We had a pleasant discussion about books and other small tidbits of small talk that was as fleeting as the length of our bus ride.

She waved a hand down at her hideous outfit. Yeah, I never pictured it either.

Actually, you look cute.

Her incredulous gaze shot to his, but he didnt notice as he wrestled the lid off the barrel. He managed it a whole lot easier than she usually did, but then, he was made of muscle.

Cats had followed them in, and now more gathered as he opened their food source. Meows filled the air. It was tough to move with so many animals twining around their legs.

After he almost tripped, Miles said, Impatient, arent they?

Im late.

What time do you usually feed them?

By seven thirty or so at the latest. Generally I feed them, then get my coffee and sit on the porch to enjoy the morning before I get started on chores.

Somehow, that doesnt sound awful.

No, she agreed. It was actually a nice routine. If it werent for so many different things conspiring against her, shed be loving life right about now.

Several of the cats were trying to stretch up to the top of the barrel. Smiling, Maxi pointed to the long metal channel against the wall behind the barrel. I use the large scoop inside to fill that trough.

He laughed. A trough for cats.

Hey, it was the only thing I could think of to get them all fed at the same time.

Youre resourceful.

Was that two compliments in a row? Maybe he wasnt as angry as hed seemed. More likely, it was his compassionate nature trying to make her more at ease.

Butshe couldnt be the only one feeling the sexual tension. Around Miles, it hit her like a tsunami. Even under the awful circumstances, she wasnt immune to his appeal. In fact, because of everything shed just gone through, she felt even more drawn to him and his strength.

Watching as he loaded the scoop, she said, Its actually a pig trough, but when you see them eating... well, lets just say it fits.

The cats carried on as if they hadnt eaten in days, instead of just being late for breakfast. By the time Miles filled the trough, the cats had lined up side by side and were devouring their chow.

That has to be half of a bag right there.

I buy in bulk, she said. I have to store the extra bags in the house, though, or the raccoons

Throw a party? Miles grinned down at her.

They do!

He laughed, but slowly, as his gaze roamed her face, the grin faded. He removed a dried weed from her hair, tucked a wayward lock behind her ear, then brushed his thumb over her cheek. He leaned toward her.

Her toes curled in the rubber boots. God, shed missed his kiss so much, the taste of him, the feel of his firm lips and his clever tongue and

Wait. She flattened a hand to his chest.

Expression enigmatic, Miles cleaned a smudge off her cheek. Youre exhausted.

Oh God. Shed freaked out over nothing.

Get a grip, Maxi.

After clearing her throat, she said, Yes, and it shows.

He flicked the end of her nose. You still look cute.

Hed said it again! Frazzled from the mixed signals, she propped her hands on her hips. Youre either super horny or just trying to make me feel better.

How about a little of both?

Top 5 Fun Facts About Christmastime Cowboy by Maisey Yates + Giveaway (US/Can)

Christmastime Cowboy (Copper Ridge #10)
Maisey Yates
from HQN Books // Harlequin

It's Christmas in Copper Ridge, and love is waiting to be unwrapped...

Falling for a bad boy once is forgivable. Twice would just be foolish. When Sabrina Leighton first offered her teenage innocence to gorgeous, tattooed Liam Donnelly, he humiliated her, then left town. The hurt still lingers. But so does that crazy spark. And if they have to work together to set up her family winery's new tasting room by Christmas, why not work him out of her system with a sizzling affair?

Thirteen years ago, Liam's boss at the winery offered him a bribeleave his teenage daughter alone and get a full ride at college. Convinced he wasn't good enough for Sabrina, Liam took it. Now he's back, as wealthy as sin and with a heart as cold as the Oregon snow. Or so he keeps telling himself. Because the girl he vowed to stay away from has become the only woman he needs, and this Christmas could be just the beginning of a lifetime together...

Top 5 Fun Tidbits About Christmastime Cowboy

  1. Liam Donnelly was nobodys favorite. Thats the first line, and it hit me when I wrote it that Liam definitely feels like hes no ones favorite. And that was when I knew the whole point of his story was to find that person. The woman who would make sure he knew he was her favorite. I knew from the beginning of this quartet that Sabrina was that woman.
  2. The past four books in the Copper Ridge series have been about the Donnelly brothers. They all have the same father, but they have three different mothers between them. Liam, the hero of Christmastime Cowboy and Alex, from Wild Ride Cowboy are the only two brothers who were raised in the same household. But even they have two different childhood experiences. I wanted to save Liam for last, because when you read Alexs book you THINK you know what their life was like. But Liam has secrets he hasnt shared with anyone about the way he was treated by his mother. I liked the idea of exploring how the same parent can treat two children in totally different ways.
  3. Copper Ridge at Christmas is based on Jacksonville, Oregons Victorian Christmas. There are costumed carolers, chestnuts roasting, and always a horse-drawn wagon and hot cider. Its a fond memory of mine and incorporating it into the book was fun.
  4. The idea for Grassroots winery also came from my hometown. Oregon is, depending on who you ask, the new Napa. Vineyards are everywhere, and I saw a magazine article about women in Oregon breaking the glass-winery-ceiling, which is where I got the idea to have a female run winery. (There will be more on the winery coming in my new series, Gold Valley, too.)
  5. I dont drink wine. In fact, I hate the taste of it. I actually cant stand the smell or taste of any alcohol. (Some advanced sensory issue? Who can say.) Which made the wine and cheese tasting scene in Christmastime Cowboy interesting to say the least. Especially since its a sexy scene! It required googling, and questioning of my husband, who does like wine.

Snowball fights! I'm not a huge fan of snow or the cold in general, but anything that has to do with wet snow wedging itself in my boots and in my jacket sleeves is such a yucky feeling! Sledding and skiing can be fun, at least... snowball fights are like snow sports without the fun!
